Every YouTube upload sends signals — to fans, to collaborators, and to the algorithm. This guide walks through a complete, repeatable process so your videos are clean, consistent, and don’t need fixing later.
This is not theory. Follow it step by step.

Step 1: Format the Title Correctly
Use this format every time:
Artist Name – Song Title (Version)
Approved versions include:
- (Official Video)
- (Official Lyric Video)
- (Visualizer)
- (Live)
Rules:
- Capitalize each word
- Use one clear version tag
- Avoid dates, emojis, or marketing phrases
Why this matters: Consistent titles help with search, recommendations, and make large catalogs easier to manage inside YouTube Studio.
Step 2: Write the Description (In This Exact Order)
Your description should follow the same structure on every upload. Consistency helps both viewers and YouTube understand your content.
1. First 1–2 lines (above the fold)
This is what viewers see before clicking “Show More.” Treat it like a headline.
- A strong lyric
- A notable collaborator mention
- A direct smart link to the release
Why this matters: These lines affect click-through and what YouTube initially associates your video with.
2. Featured artists & collaborators
Tag artists using their @handles so they link properly. Include producers, directors, and labels when relevant.
3. Song alternates
Link to other versions of the track:
- Official video
- Lyric video
- Live performances
- Covers or remixes
This keeps viewers inside your ecosystem.
4. Smart link
- Use one smart link for the album or single
- Albums are preferred when available
- Always include a YouTube album playlist link inside the smart link
5. Artist links
Add your website or link-in-bio and key socials only. Avoid clutter.
6. Short press-style paragraph
One paragraph maximum. Natural language. Mention the artist, song title, and genre without forcing keywords.
7. Hashtags
- Use 2–3 relevant hashtags
- Avoid long strings or generic tags
Important description rules:
- Do not date your description (“Out now,” “2025 release”)
- Do not reuse messy, outdated copy
- Be cautious with full lyrics if you plan to run ads
Step 3: Smart Links & Cross-Promotion
Create one smart link for the album or single and use it everywhere.
- Include all major DSPs
- Include a YouTube album playlist
- Cross-link alternate versions in descriptions, cards, end screens, and playlists
Why this matters: Every version should support the others instead of competing with them.
Step 4: Add Collaborators (If Applicable)
If more than one artist is involved, add collaborators before publishing.
How:
- Upload the video in YouTube Studio
- Details → Show More → Collaborations → Add Collaborators
- Enter @handles or channel URLs
- Each collaborator confirms the invite
Why this matters: Collaborator credits can surface the video to multiple audiences and display all credited channels on the watch page.
Step 5: Add End Screens & Cards
Recommended end screen layout:
- 1 video
- 1 playlist
- 1 subscribe button
Cards: Link to alternate versions or a strong playlist.
Why this matters: These tools keep viewers watching instead of leaving your channel.
Step 6: Upload a Strong Thumbnail
- Must be clear on mobile
- Good lighting is essential
- Faces perform better when possible
- No blurry screenshots
If unsure, screenshot a clean frame and add minimal text.
Step 7: Assign Playlists
- Add the video to at least one playlist (e.g. “Official Videos”)
- Use collaborative playlists when working with other artists
Why this matters: Playlists increase watch time and strengthen channel performance.
Step 8: Final Settings Check
- Audience: Not made for kids (unless it truly is)
- Category: Music
- Language: Set for both video and description
- Location: Tag city or venue when relevant
